MUSICIAN APPLICATION INFORMATION
Qualifications for Enlistment

Applicants for enlistment in the U.S. Navy and subsequent transfer to the School of Music, United States Navy Band Washington, DC or Naval Academy Band must meet all qualifications for enlistment in the Navy. Additionally, all applicants must pass an official audition and be approved for enlistment by Commander, Navy Personnel Command (PERS-4014). This approval is based on the applicant's performance audition and musical background. See our Frequently Asked Questions for more information.
Audition Information

Auditions are conducted by Navy Bandmasters or their designated representatives at any official Navy Band or the School of Music. Contact your Navy Recruiter or the Navy Music Program Audition Supervisor at 1-866-827-5672, (901) 874-4316, or by email at Audition Supervisor to assist you in scheduling an audition. For specific audition information on each instrument, please select from the list below:

Music Texts

The following texts are used at the School of Music for music theory and ear training. They are available for download, and can be used to academically prepare qualified applicants for the School of Music.
  • Basic Music - Used by students attending the Navy School of Music. Covers all basic music theory including melody construction and extended and altered chords.
  • Ear Training Manual - Ear Training manual used by students at the Navy School of Music. All instruments and vocalists must be able to perform through chapter 6.
  • Harmony - Covers traditional 4 part harmony.
  • Basic Music Navy - Covers Form in Music, Media, and Conducting for Instrumentalists.
School of Music Information

After Recruit Training
, applicants approved for enlistment as a Navy Musician (MU) attend the Navy School of Music, located in Little Creek, VA. The (approximately) 21 week basic course of instruction includes classes in theory, ear training, private instrumental instruction and rehearsal in marching, concert and stage bands. After graduation, MUs are assigned to a Naval activity, ashore or afloat, as a member of a Navy band. For the locations and more information on each Navy band, please visit our Navy Bands Page.
