SALARY WIZARD: What Are You Worth? |
One of the most informative web sites around
that can show how specific military experience, in our case as Storekeepers, can relate to
potential earnings in the civilian community is:

A great tool if you are departing the Navy after either one tour or 20+ years and seek to
research how your Storekeeper military training, experience, and job assignments could
relate to a similar civilian position. First, in regard to what potential salary
relates to that experience and assignments. And, secondly, where in the United
States you wish to settle for a specific job category and salary.
The SALARY WIZARD is a FREE online program that offers a basic report showing a national
average of salaries for a job category (and further expanded to a specific job title in
that category) adjusted by any large city location in the U.S.
So for an example, Navy Storekeeper.com tried the following search: (Note: This is a
sample - additional job categories & job title breakdowns are available to refine your
search & interests.)
Job Category: Logistics; Job Title: Distribution Manager;
Job Description: Manages the ordering & distribution of products, parts, &
accessories. Ensures timely deliveries to maximize sales. Maintains contact
with retailers on product delivery & with the merchandising department on the
receiving of products. May require an associate's degree with at least 7 years of
experience in the field. Relies on experience & judgment to plan &
accomplish goals. Manages a staff of personnel & typically reports to a senior
manager.
Here were the results: (base salary - this is MEDIAN compensation based on survey data
from Certified Compensation Professionals collected from HR departments at employers of
all sizes, industries & geographics - does not include possible bonsus/benefit
package.)
San Francisco CA - $84,742; New York NY - $83,871; Boston MA - $79,006; Chicago IL -
$78,933; Seattle WA - $77,263; San Diego CA - $76,101; Houston TX - $75,520; Denver CO
- $74,867; Atlanta GA - $72,180; New Orleans LA - $70,001; and Jacksonville FL - $68,041.
We tried one more under Job Category: Logistics, this time for an: Inventory Control
Manager -
Job Description: Ensures adequate inventory of materials & products in accord with
inventory cycles & organizational philosophy. Conducts daily inventory analysis
to solve inventory problems. Develops & implements inventory control procedures.
Coordinates & manages daily physical cycle counts. Trains & manages an
inventory team. Requires a bachelor's degree with 7 years of experience in the
field. Relies on experience & judgment to plan & accomplish goals.
Manages a staff of personnel & typically reports to a senior manager.
Results for one city we tried: San Francisco CA - $79,318.
Remember: your pay can be dramatically affected by compensable factors such as employer
size, industry, employee credentials, years of experience & others.

Your Military Skills with Civilian Job Titles |
You have a Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC)
and wondering how that may translate to a Civilian Job Title? Well take a look at
the SKILLS
TRANSLATOR provided by Military.com.
At the Search Page, select either SK (for surface NECs) or AK (for aviation-related NECs)
and the results will provide the NEC with Military Job Title and the comparable Civilian
Job Title. (For example: under NEC 2820 - SNAP II Functional Area Supervisor -
compares to a "Management Analyst").
From there, for more research, you can click on the Civilian Job Title & it lists for
you an example Job Description & Salary Projections in different career fields.

The new and improved LIFELINES web site
provides a great all-in-one list of contents for everything you need to know about TRANSITION
ASSISTANCE if you departing your military career. The Personal Finance
section is a good tool for planning at least 24 months prior to retiring or separating.
And the Individual Transition Plan section and Relocation Assistance sections are
superb programs available.
You should also take a look at the Department of Defense web portal called, "Portal
