Some or No College? - Here's What To Do First
The importance of a college education cannot be overstated, so read VADM Harm's (Commander, NETC) article on obtaining a degree while in the Navy & find your career focus: "Earning A Degree, The Navy Way."   Then follow these steps -

First - Review College Credit for Military Service:
A a military service member, you already have earned American Council on Education (ACE) approved college credit for your military service - click HERE to find your specifc rating's Roadmap with Degree Roadmaps.  For example: an SK1 already have 25 lower-level college credits - about 20% of the way toward a Bachelor Degree!

Second - Obtain Navy Transcript:
Check your SMART (Sailor/Marine American Council on Education Registry Transcript).  You can receive your Unofficial Transcript directly online to review & make corrections, if needed, prior to sending to a college of your choice.  You can also order your Official Copy, if ready.  The site explains how to do all this - & your Transcript now has a link to try an Automated Degree Plan with a Servicemembers Opportunity College - Navy (SOCNAV) partner.

Third - Obtain Other College Transcripts:
Contact colleges you may have already attended for additional transcripts - & check if some military coursework does not appear on your SMART transcript.  Be sure to have records of these classes.

Fourth - Check Your Electronic Training Jacket (ETJ) on Navy Knowledge Online:
Log-in to NKO and click the Electronic Training Jacket link under the LEADERSHIP tab.  Ensure all credits you have currently earned are listed in your ETJ, and if not, following the instructions on updating.

Fifth - Contact Navy College Center or Office:
If so desired, you can contact the Navy College Center or nearest Navy College Office (check out on- & off-base local college programs) for further advice & what your next step could be toward your college degree.

Sixth - Determine Which Program or College Meets Your Desires
Would a Navy College Program (NCP) school be best? If these schools or degree programs do not interest you, how about any one of the other 1,800 colleges under the SOCNAV agreement?

To find other military-friendly colleges, you can check out the search page at MILITARY.COM.  A great tool to find a specific number of colleges that meet your wishes of degree-type & study method.

But if you are still unsure of what type of degree to go after, two great sites offer search functions that help you determine what major field of study or degree would suit you: PETERSON'S ONLINE (which also offers FREE CLEP Practice Exams) or FASTWEB! (which also offers a FREE Scholarship Search Service).

And finally, if currently on SEA DUTY, check into the Navy College Program for Afloat College Education (NCPACE) which offers courses via a variety of delivery methods. You can even review the NCPACE Course Catalog online to see what schedules are upcoming.

And those SIX STEPS should get the college education ball rolling for you!  Now review our other College Education Folders now that you have: Accounted for your military service college credit, added any additional college credit obtained, chose a degree path, chose a college, and chose the manner of study.

Guide to Navy Tuition Assistance
Time for you to utilize money you have earned just like your base pay - the Navy Tuition Assistance program that pays 100% of tuition & required fees charged by colleges for course enrollments.  But remember the Not To Exceed requirements of the Navy program - $250 per Semester Credit Hour or $166 per Quarter Credit Hour, & a maximum of 16 Semester Hours (24 Quarter) per Fiscal Year.

For more on the fine print and additional information on covered fees& eligibiility, read an article from  Military.com on Navy Tuition Assistance. Then read the NEW TA Policy at NavyCollege.com

Then get the new Tuition Assistance Application Form, NETPDTC 1560/3, and get command approval signature to enroll in a specific course or courses.
Guide to the Montgomery GI Bill
The Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) is available for active duty and veterans to help with education costs.  The Bill provides up to 36 months of education benefits for: College, Business Technical or Vocational Courses - Distance Learning & Correspondence Courses - Certification Tests - Apprenticeship/Job Training & Flight Training.

And with benefits increasing every year (full-time students can get up to $985 a month - a total benefit over $35,000!), it is smart to use those benefits now.  Even on Active Duty...and here's how:

Read one of these series of articles from Military.com, "How The GI Bill Works For You" - it will explain how MGIB works on Active Duty & a complete FAQ on benefits & payments.

Then read "What's New With The GI Bill" which explains about the increased rates effective 1 Oct 2003 - then go through the complete details on eligibility reading: "Eligibility Details".

And now, the application process - which is easier than you think.  Just follow the 4 Easy Steps given by Military.com in the article: "How to Apply For your MGIB Benefits".  Then download VA form 22-1990 to start filling out.  Remember, the college you are applying to must be approved for VA training or education - you can ensure this by checking out the Veterans Administration web site.

You may also apply for your MGIB benefits at the new Veterans ON-line APPlication (VONAPP) web site.  Your application will be provided an automatic email response, letting you know it has been received.
DANTES, CLEP & Other Exams For College Credit
The DANTES (Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Educational Support) program was established in 1974 to provide programs & services in support of off-duty voluntary education programs in the military.  It possible to take these FREE (for military personnel) exams to earn credit for everything from an Associates Degree to a PHD.  You should include the options of DANTES exams, CLEP (College Level Exam Program), and ECE (Excelsior College Examinations) in any college program schedule.

Read the Military.com article: "All About DANTES Programs" and then visit the DANTES web site to learn all about these exams and others available to you.  On the DANTES site, go to the "Examination Programs" link and review all about: Programs Available, Fact Sheets & Material, and Pass Rates for every CLEP General & Subject exam, every DANTES exam, and every ECE exam.

There is also a link at the DANTES site on "Reserve Component Programs" that explains everything available to USNR personnel.
